wellmed – low-value care playbook illustrations

"Low-value care" might sound cheap, but it's actually outrageously expensive. A shocking amount of healthcare spending in the U.S. goes toward services that don't really make us healthier. This practice is called "low-value care," and is defined as tests, procedures, and services that provide little or no clinical benefit and sometimes can even harm the patient.

WellMed, a large provider of senior healthcare, wanted to help its network eliminate such care, so they asked me to design a reference guide for their doctors. Part of that exercise was to create these illustrations that clearly demonstrated how low-value care = high cost.
